Teacher of the Week: Jennifer Mabe
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - WITN’s Teacher of the Week is Jennifer Mabe. She is a math teacher at John Paul II in Pitt County.
Jennifer Mabe also known as “Mama Mabe” says she enjoys transforming her perspective on school, especially in the subject of math.
Mabe doesn’t have a classroom, so she teaches from a cart. She says this has become one of the best parts of her job because students can find her so easily.
“I really enjoy turning students’ opinions of math class from ‘ugggghhh, math is next’ to ‘yessss, math is next!” says Mabe.
Mabe has a diverse teaching background, including the traditional setting for seven years at J.H. Rose High School and Pitt County School Early College High School, as well as the nontraditional setting at the Greenville Learning Center and North Carolina Virtual Public Schools.
She teaches three courses and serves as the department head in the school.
Mabe believes that making math relevant to students and providing multiple opportunities for inquiry-based lessons allows students to “own” their education.
With no classroom, she thinks outside of the box. From teaching and solving math problems on sidewalks to hosting Easter Egg hunts for her students, Mabe says she accepts the challenge to show each student how fun math can be.
